A couple of weeks ago, I scoffed when I read the Senate President raising alarms about being targeted by the police after some suspects were moved to Abuja from Kwara state. I was definitely naïve and I believe some Nigerians were as well.
On the 3rd of June 2018, precisely, almost 3 weeks after Saraki raised the alarm, he was summoned to appear before a team of investigators in a statement released by ACP JIMOH MOSHOOD. From all looks, this move smirks of a highly placed vindictive individual.
Should Saraki have any case to answer, I believe he should answer for it. It however is preposterous to link him with armed robbers. Like Kayode Ogundamisi postulated, Saraki is known for his magic pen, when did he become an armed robber? Now, the police might argue that he is not wanted in connection to the robbery case, but rather due to his patronage of the robbers or maybe just a particular individual amongst them. If that is the case, why then call a press conference and announce you are summoning the 3rd most powerful individual in Nigeria in connection to a robbery?
Indeed this would prove to be an opportunity for him and most nPDP members of the APC to point out perceived witch hunting of any who dares speak or stand against the government of the day.
I would advise he honors this invitation if just to be exemplary (in a press release made by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki will be honoring the invitation). This is because he has become a symbol albeit unintentionally many might say.
Reactions have trailed this invitation and here are some of them.
And just like everyone else, it is looking like the theatre of the absurd. We ask now, if we are truly practicing the tenets of democracy or an abridged version where perceived opponents are hounded. That doubts trail the announcement shows a distrust and a perception of that 2019 elections will see a lot more individuals targeted and witch hunted. The onus now is on the police to prove their case and change public opinion about their ability to remain non partisan
The Senate President has now been asked to respond in writing to the allegations leveled against him.
