The Malian immigrant had climbed up an apartment building to save a child seen dangling from the balcony. It took Mamoudou Gassama less than 40 seconds to get to the child and take the child out of danger.
His heroics made national news and he is viewed by many as a hero. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo praised him for his courage saying on twitter that “his heroic act is an example to all citizens and that the city of Paris will obviously be very keen to support him in his efforts to settle in France.”
This promise has come to fruition after French President Macron met with Mamoudou Gassama this morning. Mamoudou Gassama was awarded a medal for his bravery and also landed a job as a fireman. He will also become a citizen of France with President Macron stating that “all the documents will be put in order”,
When he had climbed the building to rescue the child, the Malian immigrant who had only just arrived in France late last year was not thinking about any reward for his action. He had simply done what was human to do with little thought towards his safety.
The child is unharmed save for a torn nail and the father will be charged to court after he was detained for questioning.
