The absurdities and contradictions of Nigeria as a nation is mind boggling. This was highlighted yesterday which was Democracy day. A day Nigeria has marked aside to mark the return to democracy after almost 16 years under military rule.
The irony of yesterday’s celebrations was that it was presided over by a man who truncated democracy and kick started a vicious 16 year military rule some 36 years ago. A misadventure that cost this country dearly and sent it on a downward spiral into the chasm it is morphing into now. How we as a people then proceeded to give the same individual the chance to lead us despite his treasonable act is a sign being naive.
It is telling that democracy day is now being used as a day to reel off seeming achievements of our political leaders anxious to be seen as working and they totally ignore the tenets of democracy.
Should we at this point in our democracy be on a different realm of reality from our leaders? For as they blow their own trumpets and swim in their tirades of self accolades, we the people are being killed, robbed and endlessly humiliated. It is now a vicious cycle that like the proverbial snake that swallowed its own tail, we are on a path of self destruction.
Falz captured the state of our union in his cover of This is America titled This is Nigeria, and his subtle jab at the government and the people should not be taken lightly. For we ourselves have brought this horrid situation on ourselves, and who but us to remedy it?
